The 6,000 pipes of Symphony Hall's spectacular Organ get a thorough
outing this evening in the Symphony Hall premieres of two great works
from the French tradition. Berlioz's celebratory Te Deum is one of the
grandest of his choral works, and features children's and adult choruses
as well as a prominent role for the organ. Joseph Jongen's symphony dates
from 1926, and sounds like an extended version of the far better-known
organ Symphony by Saint-Saëns - like his great predecessor, Jongen combines
organ with full orchestra to thrilling effect. Birmingham's world-renowned
City Organist Thomas Trotter will be in the hot seat this evening, with
Adrian Lucas (himself a distinguished organist) conducting.
