| Elgar: | The Kingdom |
|
|
Over the last decade, Sakari Oramo has conducted the Centenary performances
of all three of Elgar's choral masterpieces for the Birmingham Trienniel
Festival - Gerontius, The Apostles, and, just last year, The Kingdom. Now
Sakari reaches journey's end, and concludes this Elgar Anniversary weekend
with a second performance this season of Elgar's final oratorio. Elgar never
finished his New Testament Trilogy, but this second instalment finds his
inspiration in full flight. Opening with a majestic orchestral prelude,
and painted in glowing orchestral colours, this stirring setting of the
'Acts of Jesus' disciples is the closest he ever got to writing an opera.
