Freedom – The Power of Song / Will Todd: Mass in Blue, Elgar Concert Hall

Sunday, 17th November 2019 at 2:30pm; Elgar Concert Hall, University of Birmingham, Bramall Music Building, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK B15 2TT.

The City of Birmingham Choir are delighted to bring to the Elgar Hall two exciting and uplifting pieces of modern choral music both with a jazz and blues vibe.

‘Mass in Blue’ combines British composer Will Todd’s twin backgrounds of jazz and church music. Since its premiere in 2003, it has been capturing the imagination of choirs and audiences worldwide with its setting of the liturgical Mass in jazz and 12-bar blues.

‘Freedom! The Power of Song’ is the fifth in the popular series of choral works from Alexander and Joanna Forbes L’Estrange. This powerful and emotive work celebrates the vital role communal singing has played throughout history, bringing people together in solidarity at times of upheaval, struggle and change. We greatly enjoyed performing Alex’s cantata ‘Zimbe!’ a few seasons back. Once again, we will be delighted to welcome Alex’s own band to accompany us.

Sunday afternoon at 2.30 pm, 17th November 2019 at the University of Birmingham’s wonderful Elgar Concert Hall. It is free to park on the university campus at the weekend, and there is the University station just two stops from Birmingham New Street as well as excellent bus connections.
